Happy are those who mourn.

That's interesting, isn't it?

That you can only really become happy if you mourn. How does that work out?

Well, we can begin to learn what this means from the prodigal son. We learn from the prodigal son what it means to

mourn. You remember the story, the son who had everything, but he thought he couldn't be happy living with his

father so he asks for his inheritance before his father is dead kind of wishing his father is dead, kind of wishing his father was dead, and then he turns to a life

of sin searching for what he already had. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a

distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery. When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now

he began to feel the pinch. So he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs.

And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but not one offered him anything.

Then he came to his senses and said how many of my father's paid servants have

more food than they want and here I am dying of hunger.

I know what I'll do. I'll leave this place and go to my father and say,

Father, I have seen against heaven and against you.

So he left the place and went back to the father.
