In this podcast, I want to talk to you about black pepper. Is it good, or is it bad? The truth is, there’s something very good and very bad about black pepper. Let me explain.
The main phytonutrient in black pepper that benefits your health is called piperine.
Pepper can:
• Relieve stomach aches
• Improves dopamine and serotonin levels
• Reduce inflammation
• Provide vitamin K, iron, and magnesium
• Improves bioavailability of some compounds (by up to 2000%)
By far, the most amazing part of black pepper is its ability to increase the bioavailability of other compounds, including:
• Curcumin
• Selenium
• B12
• B6
• Vitamin A
The problem is that piperine can also increase the bioavailability of toxic substances. It can prevent your liver from getting rid of toxins in the body, so you will retain it.
It’s not good if you’re taking certain medications, including:
• Lithium
• Tegretol
• Rifampin
• Dilantin
• Viramune XR

| 0:21.6 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting Podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. Now, I've done a lot of videos on salts and different herbs, but I haven't done one on |
| 0:48.9 | pepper. Pepper is one of the most common herbs, and there's something really, really good |
| 0:53.3 | about it, and there's something really, really good about it, and there's |
| 0:54.4 | something really, really bad about it. Now, I want to talk about that. Now, the main phytonutrient in black |
| 0:59.2 | pepper that gives you the big benefit is called piperine. And pepper can actually give you some relief |
| 1:05.3 | if you have a stomach ache. It can improve certain neurotransmitters in the brain by a small |
| 1:10.7 | degree, but it still has some effect on the neurotransmitters in the brain by a small degree, but it still has some |
| 1:12.5 | effect on the neurotransmitters. It also has a little bit of an anti-inflammatory effect. |
| 1:17.9 | It has a small amount of vitamin K, iron, and magnesium. But the biggest benefit of black pepper, |
| 1:25.2 | specifically this compound right here, is that it helps increase the |
| 1:29.1 | bioavailability of other compounds up to 2,000%. So it's very good if it's in combination with |
| 1:37.1 | certain things and not very good if it's in combination with something very toxic. Because what it does is it inhibits a certain |
| 1:47.1 | chemical process in your liver that normally gets rid of drugs and herbs and certain compounds. |
| 1:53.4 | So when this process is inhibited, you will retain and absorb more of drugs and herbs in certain |
| 2:00.7 | compounds. But on the positive side, it can actually |
| 2:03.4 | really improve the absorption of curcumin, selenium, B12, B6, and vitamin A. So that's very cool. |
| 2:12.6 | But on the flip side, if you're taking certain medications, this one for depression, this one for seizures, this one's for |
| 2:19.7 | seizures, this one is for TB, this one is for HIV. If you're taking certain medications, |
| 2:25.3 | and there's other ones as well, these levels can get very toxic in your body. So you don't want to |
