I would love to start by talking about your book, The Hate You Give, which is such a powerful

We had our band book club read it, and they loved it. It's a young adult novel about a girl

who witnesses a police officer, kill her friend. So what inspired you to write a book

about Black Lives Matter and specifically what inspired you to write it from the perspective

of a teenage girl?

I first got the idea for the book back in 2011 after the death of Oscar Grant in Oakland, California.

I was living in two very different worlds.

I attended a mostly white private college.

And it was just 10 minutes from

my house, but my house was in a mostly black poor neighborhood, both in Jackson, Mississippi.
