Hello, I'm Martha Carney from BBC Radio 4's Today programme,

and nothing really says the Eurovision Song Contest quite like Abba.

Their win with Waterloo back in 1974 really launched them as a supergroup,

and that's lasted for decades.

Abba's Bjorn Orvais has been our guest editor on today

and brought with him fascinating insights and encounters about Eurovision.

In this podcast, we bring you those Eurovision highlights,

starting with Bjorn's own memories of Abba's 1974 triumph.

Originally, we sang Waterloo in Swedish.

But we decided, and it was allowed, I think, for the first time that year,

if we could do it in English.

And, of course, we wanted to do it in English

because that's what we were all about.

English being the language of pop.

And when you look back to that victorious night, what do you remember?

Oh, I remember walking the corridors. I didn't dare to look at the screens with all

those points coming in. But then I suddenly heard Benny, he was looking at them and he could calculate in his head very quickly.

We won!

And then there was chaos.

Did you expect to win?

No, I didn't.
