Summary

Writer and host of the new podcast Heidi World: The Heidi Fleiss Story, Molly Lambert, joins DJ Louie to break down the spectacular emergence of Gen Z's most paradigm-shifting star, Billie Eilish. First, Molly, who profiled Billie last year for the cover of Elle, shares insights into what it was like spending time with her, how she's relating to her newfound megastardom, as well as her fans on social media and out in the world, and why she doesn't consider herself a "pop star" at all. Louie and Molly then discuss how unlikely 2010s breakouts like Lorde, Halsey and Lana Del Rey softened the ground for idiosyncratic, insular-sounding bedroom artists to become mainstream pop stars. Next, they track Billie's career origins, along with her brother and collaborator Finneas, on Soundcloud, how their viral hit "Ocean Eyes" lead to a record deal with Interscope when Billie was just 15, and how her debut EP, 2017's Don't Smile At Me, presented a new kind of teen idol who leaned into, rather than glossed over, the alienation, depression and anxiety of being a young person in the internet era, thus endearing her to a new generation of pop fans who craved less-aspirational and more relatable pop figures. They also dive into she and Finneas' far-ranging aesthetic influences from horror movies to trip hop, Gorillaz, Lil Peep, Bjork, Garbage and even Frank Sinatra, before laying out her explosion into the mainstream with her debut album, 2019's Grammy-sweeping When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, how that record expanded the duo's musical palette but also perhaps garnered Billie an unwanted and unintentional level of fame, how she went about addressing all of that on her sophomore album, 2021's more low-key masterpiece Happier Than Ever, how she's uniquely positioned to bring large swaths of the pop-consuming public along with her singular, strange musical instincts, and where she might go next. Finally, Louie and Molly rank Billie Eilish in the official Pop Pantheon.

Welcome to Pop Pantheon, the podcast where we completely overanalyze all of your favorite pop stars and then rank them in the official Pop Pantheon.

0:18.2

This is your host, DJ Louis X.

0:19.4

Thank you, everyone, for coming back for another round of pop star analysis with me.

0:25.0

I'm so grateful to have you guys here. In the great new tradition of Pop Pantheon, let's kick

0:29.9

things off by reading some of my favorite recent reviews that you guys have so graciously left

0:34.8

on Apple Podcasts. The first comes from Jotade, who says, I rarely binge

0:39.9

podcasts, but I've now done exactly that with PP. I really appreciate how it manages to be

0:44.0

not just knowledgeable about the artists and their music, but also contextualizes them within their

0:48.6

specific moment in time. As someone who missed the 90s and 2000s due to a very conservative

0:53.6

upbringing, it made me aware of a lot of dynamics and musical micro trends I missed at the time.

0:57.9

DJ Louie and guests also managed to thread the needle of both giving due and good natured dragging all artists on her discussion.

1:05.7

Oh my God.

I know everyone is clambering for an F on their top tier diva that they stand, but I often find the discussions of lower tier niche legends even more fascinating. Me too, actually, I have to agree. Would love one hit wonders, middling solo careers after group breakups, and failures from across the pond, hi Rita. Also, Casey, Azalea, Jesse, Solange, Lana, Sky, wow. Kim, Vanessa Carlton, Paris. Yes, these are all good. So thank you so much for that. Next is from Birdburn, who says, I'm obsessed. I've been ranking the girls using a tier structure in my head for years. So when I found out that there was a podcast that did the same thing, I immediately felt a kinship. DJ Louis expertly blends technical knowledge, historical context, and passionate fandom to create an endlessly compelling and fun podcast. Thanks to pop pantheon. I finally have the vocabulary to describe why Beyonce is on a different level than Gaga and Rihanna. Wow. What a service I'm providing. Thank you so much for that. And finally, a couple last ones. Anonymous says, amazing podcast, smart, informative, entertaining, would love episodes about George Michael. Yes, Shadeh, yes, Pet Shop Boys, yes, and Mary J. Blige, absolutely. Can't wait for those myself. And finally, from Jen Sal, 1997, I love this podcast so much. I was turned on to it from Dunzo. I adore the loving takes on pop culture and the little bits of music. For the Dunzo heads out there, I am happy to say there's going to be something special for you guys coming up pretty soon. So thank you everybody who's left reviews. Please continue to leave reviews on Apple Podcasts. As I say every episode, this is the best thing you can do to help the podcast grow at this time. And I really appreciate it. I also want to say that we did just do a contest where people left reviews requesting artists

2:37.8

and Usher One, which is an episode that we're going to fast track in the near future.

2:41.8

But we're actually going to start a new contest.

2:44.2

And that is, I want to ask everybody to share their favorite episode on social media.

2:50.5

If you can, go out there, pick your favorite episode, go to the Pop Panther on Instagram.

2:54.5

You can share the artwork.

2:55.4

You can share it directly from Spotify.

2:57.2

And if you do that, if you go on our social media and share the episodes from there

3:01.2

or share them from Spotify and tag Pop Pantheon Pod on Instagram or Twitter

3:05.9

and include a sentence about why you like the episode
