This story comes from the perspective of an old co-worker named Kujo, a member of the Navajo Nation.

When I was working in construction in northern New Mexico on a reservation,

he told me about a very strange encounter that he had near his home,

somewhere between New Mexico and Arizona.

It began one night after Kujo had finished a grueling 12-hour shift.

When he got home, he and his wife got into a heated argument.

Frustrated, he left the house with a pack of beer

and started driving around the reservation roads near his home.

After a few minutes of driving through the dark desert,

he found a narrow road that wound up toward a mountain or basin.

He said the path was so steep and tight

that he was surprised he made it to the top without rolling off, and he knew getting
