Today, President Biden is expected to announce his first major action on gun reform since taking

office. First, White House officials say he'll nominate a gun safety advocate to lead the Bureau

of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, better known as ATF. Then, President Biden is expected

to announce executive actions that would put two new regulations in place later this year.

One would require buyers of so-called ghost guns to get background checks. Those are handmade

or self-assembled guns that don't have serial numbers. Some can be put together in as little as

30 minutes using kits and parts bought online. The second would target stabilizing braces for

pistols, like the one used in a mass shooting at a Colorado grocery store last month. Those

braces help make a pistol more stable and accurate. So, the new rule would classify pistols with

braces as short-barrel rifles, meaning owners would need a federal license to carry them,

and they'd have to go through a more thorough application process. The president is also

expected to announce new investments in community violence intervention programs and more.

One, Biden administration official told reporters, these steps are within the president's

authority and they'll save lives. But already, some top Republicans are slamming Biden over
