To kick off the debate, we were fortunate enough to have the former Director General of the World Trade Organisation,

Pascal Lamy, deliver a keynote speech.

He began by simply stating the facts.

I think there's no mystery in the fact that Brexit is a mess.

The reason behind this mess is that it's based on a fundamental misunderstanding about what Brexit is about.

In short hand, Brexit was made by many people to be about some sort of quick rapid operation of unplugging.

The reality always was to be very different.

If it's about something, it's about unscrambling, not unplugging.

It's about a long and painful process. The plugging has something to do with

Brexit, for how much of economic Brexit, it being understood that in the meantime, since UK joined in the 70s, the

scrambling of the omelette has made the cost of politically leaving economically high.

This notion that it's about a custom union and a backstop would solve the Irish problem.

I'm sorry to say, makes absolutely no sense.

A customs union is about administering tariffs at a border.

A single market is removing borders because you don't need borders anymore.
