Summary

Ever since pre-Revolutionary days in southern New Jersey the legend of a devilish flying cryptid called the 'Leeds Devil" and more recently 'The Jersey Devil' has persisted. Terrified locals living in the 1.1 million acre forested area called the Pinewoods share blood chilling stories and legends of sightings beginning with present day and going back to colonial times. Historians believe that much of it began when Ben Franklin began trading insults with a Pinewoods family named Leeds who competed with him for Almanac sales, but they have trouble explaining the hundreds of sightings of the winged devil.
