Hello and welcome to this edition of Between the Lines. The podcast that desiphers the handwriting, unfolds faded pages and dips into the details of diaries, log books and letters written during this same week.

There or thereabouts in 1943 some 80 years ago.

Let's start with a quick recap of the situation.

It's the second week of April 1943.

The Allies are doing well in North Africa and Rommel knows that things have taken a turn for the worse.

In the Far East and Burmure at least the British armies responded to Japanese infiltration of the Arachon

and on the home front the newspapers carry news of air raids aplenty in Britain and overseas.

However as our German fighter ace Heinz Nocker notes in his diary, I flew for the fure.

The air raids weren't exactly one sided.

The Americans met an attack on Breamen today.

We took off with our bombs and we had a chance to drop them when the flight is in close formation over the heart of Breamen, but not a single bomb registers.

We immediately go into attack with our guns and make three runs at a fortress and finally catch us fire.
