I'm John Bachelor. Bob Zimmerman is here and he's taking us

to a discovery that is striking to me about asteroids but not in our solar system far,

far away.

What am I looking at, Bob?

Yes, this is the star Bet Better Pictorist, which is a relatively young star, thought

to be only about 20 million years old.

It has a debris disk around.

And in fact, in many ways scientists think that

better pictures is a comparable to what our solar system was like

in its early formation when you had a debris disk and you had planets beginning to form with lots of

collisions.

Well, the Spits of Space Telescope, which was infrared back in 2004, took data and showed data there was a lot of dust in a particular place in the

pre-disc.

Taking Webb, they looked at that same place again, about 20 years years later and the dust was gone.

They didn't expect the dust to be gone and so what they think actually was

what happened here is that the dust was evidence of a gigantic asteroid collision back in

oh four that over time has cleared the debris is cleared away and that's why the web doesn't

see it.

This collision would be very, very big.

It would be many ways comparable to the theory of how the moon was created,
