Fritz Kleiner and Susie Newsom Lynch.

This case takes us to Reedville and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Reedville, North Carolina was once a

major producer of tobacco. In the late 19th century, it became a major cigarette manufacturing site

for the American tobacco company, which employed dozens of residents until its closure in 1994.

Winston-Salem falls within a region of North Carolina known as the Piedmont Triad that also

encompasses Greensboro and High Point. In 1937, Krispy Kreme, the company famous for its donuts and coffee,

got started in what is now historic old Salem in Winston-Salem. Nowadays, the area is an artsy

college town with a modest cost of living. The main players in this case are part of the same

extended family, which makes it somewhat difficult to follow. Susie Sharp Newsom was born on December 24,

1946 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was the only child of Robert Newsom Jr. and his wife

Florence Sharp Newsom. Susie was named after her aunt on her mother's side, Susie Sharp.

Florence's sister made the family proud. She was the country's first elected female chief justice

of a state supreme court. The Newsom's undoubtedly hoped their daughter would follow in the footsteps

of her namesake. And decades later, Susie would go on to make an impact, though not in a way
