In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries, “Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing.” This documentary shows viewers the dark side of child influencers and what can go wrong when minors are pushed to produce content and income. Piper Rockelle’s YouTube channel, featuring her “squad,” was wildly successful and earning hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. Over time, members of the squad and their parents came to see Piper’s mother, Tiffany Smith, as problematic, exploitative and a master manipulator. Video footage in the documentary shows Tiffany exhibiting disturbing behavior toward the children, and even forcing herself onto one of the minor squad members. In 2022, 11 former squad members filed a lawsuit against Tiffany Smith and her much younger boyfriend, Hunter Hill. The plaintiffs alleged that Tiffany and Hunter sabotaged their YouTube channels, and claimed Tiffany abused them. Jami gets into all the details of this cringey and disturbing documentary, providing all of her personal hot takes along the way. In December 1989, 37-year-old Susan Simoni clocked out from her job as a medical secretary. A simple plan lay ahead: pick-up dog from the groomer and daughter from ballet. A fairly typical evening. Or so she thought. Outwardly, Susan had it all. But beneath the veneer of a perfect life, a hidden darkness lurked. Susan’s marriage of 15 years was falling apart. The previous night, Susan had finally broached the subject of divorce with her husband Brian. She’d even handed Brian a pamphlet, a guide to navigating the painful process with minimal damage to their three children—ages 14, 11, and 9. When Susan failed to pick up her daughter, Alicia, from ballet and never arrived home that night, Brian called police to report her absence. The next morning, Susan was found dead in her SUV. It didn’t take police long to identify a suspect, and his identity surprised everyone …everyone, that is, but those who knew Susan best. In May 1996, 24-year-old Julianne Williams and 26-year-old Laura Winans set off on a weeklong camping trip in Shenandoah National Park. The two experienced hikers were eager to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Virginia wilderness. The adventure was a celebration of sorts. Julie and Lollie, as they were known to friends, had recently moved in together in Vermont, a major step in their relationship. The young women had not yet come out to their families back home in the Midwest, and were still adjusting to life as an openly gay couple. On May 31, 1996, Julie’s father reported the couple missing as they’d been due home three days earlier. The two women’s bodies were discovered the next day. They’d been brutally assaulted and murdered. A widespread investigation to find their killer ensued, but would ultimately lead to the wrong man. Julie and Lollie’s families would have to wait decades for answers, and the close of their case would be deeply disappointing for some. In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Peacock docuseries: “Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story.” This 3-part documentary takes viewers behind the scenes of the wildly popular, and controversial, TV show “Girls Gone Wild” which first aired in the 1990s. Company founder, Joe Frances, has been accused numerous times by different women of physical and sexual assault. Frances has been living in Mexico, in exile, for years following his conviction on assault charges. There was nothing particularly unusual about the morning of February 16, 1997. Sarah Jackson didn’t usually work Sundays at Captain D’s seafood restaurant. The 16-year-old was a devoted churchgoer. On this day, however, Sarah had agreed to help her manager Steve Hampton open. When Sarah agreed to work that Sunday, she couldn’t have possibly known it would be her last shift ever. A gun toting man disrupted Sarah’s shift, shattering many lives in an instant. The violence unleashed on Nashville by The Fast Food Killer didn’t stop there. Before long, investigators would discover the assailant’s story didn’t start there either. By the end of the brutal crime wave, seven people would be dead, and several more potentially linked to the same killer. Before becoming America’s weed-smoking darling and Martha Stewart’s bestie, Calvin Broadus Jr., known to the world as Snoop Dogg, was a member of the Crips, a notorious LA-based street gang. Prior to his fateful encounter with super-producer Dr. Dre at age 19, Snoop Dogg faced a bleak future, teetering on the brink of prison or death. Born on the tough streets of Long Beach, California, his earliest years were marked by struggle and strife. It's hard to imagine now, but Snoop Dogg’s career, one that has cemented his status as a global icon, nearly met a premature end. In September 1993, with his highly anticipated debut album, Doggystyle, poised for release, Snoop was arrested in Los Angeles and accused of being an accessory to murder. If convicted, he faced life in prison. On August 25th, Snoop was behind the wheel of a vehicle involved in a deadly shooting that left 20-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, Philip Woldemariam, dead. The question hanging over Snoop and his entourage was stark: was the shooting self-defense, or cold-blooded murder? The answer would rest with a jury, which held the future of a rap superstar in its hands. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir where she comments on true crime cases and reality TV! February 23, 2020, was just another day in the lives of Jorge Torres and Sarah Boone—a day filled with aimless hours, empty routines, and drinking. Only this day, a seemingly harmless game of hide-and-seek would turn deadly. The murder weapon: a suitcase. Jorge Torres took his last breath stuck inside of a suitcase as Sarah Boone slept upstairs. Video footage captured by Sarah that fateful evening shocked the nation and became key evidence during her trial. A jury would have to decide whether Jorge’s death was murder, self-defense, or simply a tragic error. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! While Jami takes time off from recording MURDERISH during the Holidays, we’re releasing an episode of her other podcast, Lipstick & Lies. In this episode of Lipstick & Lies, Jami walks co-host Melissa Moore through the case of Texas stage mom, Wanda Holloway. In 1989, Wanda went to great lengths to secure her daughter’s spot on the coveted junior high cheerleading team. When her daughter, Shanna Harper, DIDN’T make the cheer squad, Wanda was seething with anger. The socialite stage mom then took steps to make sure Shanna would be on the cheer team the following year. The steps she took, however, would turn many peoples’ lives upside down and end in a courtroom shocker. This is the bizarre tale of an overzealous Texas socialite and cheer mom who’d carefully planned out her life and image, and nobody was going to get in the way of that …even if it meant murder. On May 27th, 1991, a call came in to the front desk of the Palm Springs Ramada Inn. The caller was 33-year-old Susan Schnell, a guest at the hotel. Shockingly, Schnell said that she had been sexually assaulted and her throat had been slit. The battered woman was in critical condition but fortunately, she survived. Police quickly arrested her attacker. When investigators questioned the man about the attack on Schnell, they got much more than they bargained for. He admitted not only to the abduction and assault of Susan Schnell, but also told police where they could find the body of a young woman in Seattle whom he had murdered the previous Friday. After being alerted of this grisly confession, King County Police soon found the body of a young woman inside the trunk of her own car. The body was identified as being 21-year-old Holly Washa. Join me as I walk you through the case of Holly Washa and her delayed justice. In August 2016, 24-year-old Ashley Byers and 54-year-old Doug Benefield got married just 13 days after meeting. To a hopeless romantic, a whirlwind romance can seem like a dream. From a more practical standpoint, marrying someone you barely know can be perceived as impulsive and reckless. People close to the couple wondered - how well can you know someone in such a short span of time? In this case, it’s not clear whether Doug and Ashley’s rushed nuptials had anything to do with the relationship’s tragic end. And to this day, there remains much debate over the reasons why one of them would end up dead. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! On October 21, 2021 a small crew took their places on the set of a low-budget movie titled “Rust,” starring veteran actor Alec Baldwin. When it came time for the scene to be played out, Baldwin pulled out a revolver and a shot rang out. Confusion reigned as the frightened group looked in all directions. Then their eyes fixed on a single point …42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins gripping her chest. She took three small steps backwards then slumped to the floor. She’d been shot. A frantic call to 911 sent first responders cascading onto the rural movie set outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. A helicopter rushed Halyna to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. By the time she arrived, there was little for doctors to do. Within minutes, Halyna Hutchins was pronounced dead. The questions were starkly obvious. Why was there live ammunition on a movie set? How did it get there? And how had a revolver loaded with a lethal round been placed in the hands of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars? In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries: “The Menendez Brothers.” This 2024 documentary highlights the widely publicized case involving Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers who killed their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. This brutal case had a grip on the entire nation because it had all the makings of a Hollywood movie …a rich family from Beverly Hills that seemed perfect from the outside looking in. What most people didn’t know at the time was that inside of their Beverly Hills mansion was a house of horrors, according to graphic and disturbing testimony at the Menendez brothers’ first trial. In this episode, Jami recalls her memories and perception of this case from her youth and how her opinions have shifted over the years. She also recaps the documentary and breaks down new developments in this 30+ year old murder case. Sponsors: Visit ForHers.com/MURDERISH for your personalized weight loss treatment options. The caller told the 9-9-9 operator that her daughter’s partner had collapsed. When emergency medical personnel reached the home, they found Lyndsey Vaux unresponsive and not breathing. Lyndsey Vaux died not long after the 9-9-9 call. Investigators could have never been prepared for the information they would learn about the events leading up to Lyndsey’s death. In the Winter of 1995, the former leader of hip hop’s most notorious group, N.W.A., lay bed-ridden, pale, and connected to all manner of life-saving devices and fighting for every breath. At the time, Eazy was on top of his game when, seemingly out of nowhere, the iconic rapper developed a cough. At first, Eazy was diagnosed with bronchitis-related asthma and sent home three days after seeking medical care. The prescribed drugs didn’t help. On February 24th, he was admitted to Cedars-Sinai to undergo extensive testing. The lab results shocked everyone, from fans to foes. Eric Wright was dying of AIDS. Within a month, the music mogul and rap pioneer would be dead. Only, the story doesn’t end there. As we approach 30 years since the death of Eazy-E, questions remain. How did he contract AIDS? Why did he perish so quickly from a condition known to result in a slow demise? Could foul play have been involved? And what’s the story behind his death-bed wedding to girlfriend Tomica Woods, and his much debated last will and testament? Tristan Jensen was a young teenager who had his whole life ahead of him. He and his family lived in Redlands California. Unfortunately, he crossed paths with another boy who would end his life much too soon. After police caught up to Tristan’s murderer, JP Remsen, they discovered just how cold, and callous the boy was. Valaree Schwab was a smart and outspoken teenager. According to her family, Valaree was bullied at school for being so outspoken. On what should have been a typical day at school, Valaree and her boyfriend were stalked and followed to a nearby restaurant. The angry mob outside was shouting for Valaree to come outside. She and her boyfriend waited until they thought it was safe, and then exited the restaurant. What happened next would forever change the lives of several teenagers and their families. Dirty Money Moves: Women in White Collar Crime is BACK! In Season 3, we’re deep diving into the case involving Tracii Hutsona, a self-described “winner” who appeared to have it all: successful businesses, multimillion dollar mansions, luxury cars, and plenty of cash to spend on high end jewelry and vacations. She’s an intriguing woman who’s had a lengthy acting and modeling career, one that saw her on the cover of several major magazines, including Italian Vogue. She also had alleged romantic ties to Keanu Reeves. But the facts of Tracii’s life that make her so intriguing, are also the facts we’re checking and not much about Tracii seems to be real, except maybe her abilities as a con artist. Most recently, she made headlines for embezzling more than $1 million from Joumana Kidd, actress and ex wife of NBA star Jason Kidd, via Tracii’s luxury concierge business. Tracii opened a restaurant in San Diego, fittingly called “Breakfast Bitch,” which was funded, in part, by Joumana’s money. These recent crimes may have grabbed all the media attention, but they are by no means Tracii’s first run-ins with the law. She’s had a long history of schemes, going back 30 years. Yet, the most shocking thing about Tracii isn't the dollar amount she’s managed to steal over the years, but the way in which she victimizes the people closest to her, over and over again. This is the story of an extremely charismatic woman who can manipulate even the most savvy person into believing exactly what she needs them to, all in the pursuit of a lifestyle of luxury, glamor, and self-indulgence. By the end of this season, you might be surprised as to how all of this chaos plays out. In this episode of Murderish, I interview John Meehan’s (AKA Dirty John) first wife, Tonia Bales. You might remember Tonia from the wildly popular Dirty John podcast, where listeners got to hear recorded phone calls between John and Tonia. John’s threats to Tonia during those calls made the hair on my arms stick up. During the interview, Tonia talks about those phone calls and her motivation behind staying on the phone with John even after he threatened her. The high-profile trial of Massachusetts finance professor Karen Read ended without resolution last month. In the year’s most closely watched legal proceedings, the jury, composed of six men and six women, failed to agree on whether Read was guilty of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, or on the two other charges against her. O’Keefe, 46, was found battered, freezing and unconscious outside a Canton, Massachusetts home on the morning of January 29th, 2022, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. At trial, the commonwealth argued Karen, drunk and upset, struck John with her SUV and abandoned him in a snowstorm. Karen’s defense maintained her innocence, alleging that John was killed by fellow law enforcement officers during a house party and that Karen Read was framed by those officers. The live-streamed trial was a rollercoaster with all the drama of a Hollywood script: a police cover-up, misconduct, misogynistic and highly unprofessional text messages from the lead detective, a potential love triangle, lies, and betrayal. Millions were glued to the story, especially in New England, where papers referred to it as “Boston’s trial of the century.” What happens next is anyone’s guess as the story is far from over. On February 12, 1971 19-year-old Jesse McBane headed out to surprise his fiance, 20-year-old Patricia Mann. He was taking her to a Valentine’s Dance in Durham, North Carolina. The two lovebirds had to be back at Patricia's dormitory by 1:00 AM curfew. Only …she never returned. Durham police officers found Jesse’s Ford Cortina the next evening parked in a cul-de-sac. 12 days later, a land surveyor came upon what he thought was a mannequin’s leg sticking out from a pile of leaves. When he poked the extremity with a stick …he saw skin move. It was the missing students. Details from the crime scene suggested the couple had been tortured and murdered by hanging. Word of the heinous crime shocked the Tarheel State. The next day’s page 1 headline in the Durham Sun read: ‘Strangulation by Rope Killed Couple.” Over 50 years later, the double homicide remains North Carolina’s most notorious unsolved murder. In the Summer of 1992, the scorching temperatures in Manhattan were of little concern to Marsha P. Johnson. Her days didn’t truly start until long after the sun had gone down. Fresh from the Pride Parade, Marsha made plans the evening of July 4th, 1992 to meet her friend Miss Kitty at The Anvil, one of the many gay bars lining Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. They were supposed to rendezvous at midnight. Only …Marsha never showed. Two days later, on July 6th, a passerby spotted something floating just off the Hudson River Pier shortly after sunrise. It was Marsha. The LGBTQ rights activist was dead at 46. Given Marsha’s notoriety as an outspoken supporter of gay and trans rights, friends immediately suspected foul play. The NYPD and medical examiner saw things differently, quickly declaring Marsha’s death a suicide by drowning. Those who knew the transgender pioneer well dismissed the notion that Johnson took her own life. Her history of substance abuse and depression notwithstanding, Marsha had never given any indication she was suicidal. Over 30 years have passed and still, Marsha P. Johnson’s death remains shrouded in mystery. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club!
