Summary

Emotions color our lives with depth and richness. They drive our actions, they contain wisdom and lessons, they provide contrast, and are THE WAY we experience our lives. Yet, for many women over 40, we've been conditioned to believe they are something to be avoided at all cost. We've been told to ignore them, rise above them, numb them, resist them, hide them, medicate them, anything to not feel them. We've been told they don't matter and nothing could be farther from the truth. Our emotions carry a reservoir of wisdom and resilience forged through the crucible of lived experience. And to ignore them is to ignore our deepest wisdom, our greatest ally. In embracing our emotions, we reclaim connection, authenticity, resilience and power—the power to live as our true selves, to love fiercely, and thrive in our callings. The key to unlocking emotional freedom is to welcome all of our emotions and with all the courage and vulnerability it requires. Today is an exciting day because we are starting what likely will be

0:40.2

a six or seven part series on unlocking emotional freedom. I for the past couple of years have

0:47.4

been obsessed with studying how our brains work, how our emotions work, the wisdom they carry.

0:54.1

And today what we're going to be talking about is emotional avoidance, which is, I think,

0:59.1

for most women, their strategy with their emotions.

1:03.2

And we're going to talk about the high cost of emotional avoidance, why we do it, some of the

1:09.3

ways in which we do it, and how we can begin to really

1:14.3

embrace emotions in our lives, open up to them, live way more open-hearted.

1:20.1

So that's what we're in for today.

1:21.9

So today, all about emotional avoidance and the high cost of ignoring your life because that's what happens when we

1:30.2

avoid our emotions. So let's dive in. Emotions color our lives with so much richness and depthness.

1:38.8

They drive our actions. They contain so much wisdom. They contain lessons for us to learn, they provide contrast for

1:47.8

us, and they're actually the primary, primary way that we experience our own lives. So for women over

1:57.0

40 especially, we have kind of, most of us have come to believe that emotions are not

2:03.0

to be trusted or to avoid them at all cost. Maybe even we've been stigmatized for how much more

2:12.1

maybe emotional we are than other people. We've even been told we should rise above them. They don't matter.

2:20.2

And I firmly believe, after studying this for years, that nothing could be further from the truth.

2:26.2

I have actually come to believe that almost every problem we have in our lives is because we are
