What's up everyone? Welcome back to the show. We're back and we are going to expand upon yesterday's episode growing for the apocalypse or the challenge that I'm doing in May.

0:08.6

So the first thing I wanted to figure out for myself was you know what are some of the best foods

0:14.2

to grow if you really did have to live off of your own food what would those foods

0:17.8

be so ideally there's you know there's a lot of things to consider here of course but there are some

0:24.1

principles that I've kind of come up with or come up with via my research that I

0:29.3

think make sense so one of the first things that you're going to want to think about is the heartiness

0:34.4

level of your food, how easy it is to preserve, how easy it is to store, and then of course you're going to want to

0:39.8

think about the quality of that food. What are you growing from a nutrient

0:44.1

perspective or from a calorie perspective that makes sense for you to actually

0:48.8

live off of? So probably one of the most obvious ones you might be thinking about right now would be beans.

0:54.1

They're really high in protein, they're high in vitamins, minerals, they're also relatively high in calories as well.

0:59.8

So you have your energy requirements, but you also have a decent amount of your

1:03.2

nutrient requirements as well and then on top of that you can eat them fresh

1:06.8

let's say you have way too many to preserve you can eat some of those fresh and

1:10.8

then preserve the rest or dry the rest but you can also of course store them.

1:15.2

They have a really really long shelf life and then on top of that you can use them in a bunch of

1:20.0

different ways and then finally as a gardener they're a nitrogen fixer right so they are

1:24.7

also improving your soil at the very same time so beans are probably one of the

1:29.2

better crops that you're going to be able to grow if you were really trying to grow to live off of the land.

1:35.8

Next you've got corn.

1:38.8

Corn is an interesting one because you might not think, oh that that's what I should grow I should grow

1:43.9

corn well Native Americans grew grain corn which was traditionally grown and then
