Bernie Herman had been working for the RCMP for over 30 years and at

55 years old retirement was inching closer every day. With a wife at home, his children grown and grandchildren to enjoy, you'd think the

veteran Mountie was ready to quietly spend his golden year stretching out in the life he spent

a lifetime building.

But that's far from the way Bernie's story goes.

For reasons I don't know if we'll ever fully understand, Bernie formed a friendship with

a young man he met on Facebook, and that friendship devolved into something between a father-son

relationship and the same-sex affair.

But whatever motivated and nurtured that tumultuous relationship isn't what ended it.

While in his uniform and with his R.C. and issued firearm,

Bernie shot his 25 year old lover dead in a wooded area on the outskirts of town.

Evidence suggests he drove over his naked body as he left the scene.

As you can imagine, there's a whole bunch more to this story.

And tonight, Madeline Klein and I are going to get into it. Our topic is the story of Bernie Herman and the murder of 25 year old Brayton.

An officer who worked closely with Bernie Herman said on the night of the incident Herman's wife came to his home and showed him a text message from her husband. It said quote, I shot Braden, it's over and done with. When Bernie Herman was taken into custody,

he was wearing an R. C. M. P.

uniform, vest, and duty belt.

Herman hugged another officer, and then he was arrested.
