the inauguration of Donald Trump for the second term and remarks about tariffs

and about NATO.

However, I begin with the generality that Mr. Trump has said since his inaugural speech that

Europe buys very little from the Americas, while America buys lots of products and food from Europe.

And something must be done for the trade imbalance.

This is the first time I've heard that.

So I go to Judy immediately to read a headline from Reuters.

French and German leaders to meet under cloud of Trump tariff threats.

President Macron of France and German Chancellor Olaf Schultz set to meet in Paris

to discuss Ukraine and economic issues as Europe struggles to respond with one voice to threats of tariffs.

Judy, the puzzle here is this appears in this article to say they look surprised. This has been

communicated for some time during the campaign of Mr. Trump. He certainly has made remarks

that are consistent with his first term.

So do we believe that Mr. Schultz and President Macron are surprised, are shocked, or is this

something that they've thought about for some time and we're in denial about? I can't tell.
