If you're just joining us this morning, we're following the breaking news out of D.C.

Where last night a shooting took place at the annual White House Correspondence Dinner.

Officials say an attacker armed with two guns and several knives rushed the Secret Service checkpoint in the Washington Hilton lobby last night.

The video was shared by President Trump. The incident happened outside the ballroom where hundreds

of journalists, cabinet officials, and the president of the United States were gathered.

The attacker was apprehended and arrested on the scene. One Secret Service officer was shot,

although they were hit in their ballistic vests, according to the Secret Service. We now know that the officer has been

discharged from the hospital and is expected to be okay. Still unclear what the attacker's motive was

or who he was targeting. The White House press secretary, Caroline Levitt, posted on social media

this morning that the attacker, quote, sought to

assassinate the president and kill as many top Trump officials as possible, end quote.

It's not clear how she knows this or where she got this intelligence from. Earlier this morning,

the acting attorney general Todd Blanche was on NBC's Meet the Press, and he said this.

What we believe happened, at least as of now, is that the suspect traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then Chicago to Washington, D.C., where he checked into the hotel where the correspondent center was at in the last day or two.

We believe that the two firearms he had on him, he had purchased within the past couple of years.

And we're still investigating motive, and that's something that will necessarily take a couple of days,

at least. We believe that he was targeting administration officials in this attack, attempted

attack, but that's, again, quite preliminary. So I just want to, again, it's hard to know

exactly what's going on in these immediate moments after something happens.

But that was the acting attorney general just a little while ago, saying they weren't sure,

and it might take a couple days.
