Summary

In this episode of Behind the Uniform - Season 3, sophomore safety Mason Curtis is featured as an emerging talent within Michigan's secondary. Curtis reflects on his breakout freshman season and outlines his aspirations for the future. He notes his physical progress, currently standing at 6-4 and weighing 213 lbs., and emphasizes his adaptability to various coaching styles and positions. Curtis attributes his continued commitment to Michigan, following Coach Jim Harbaugh's transition to the professional ranks, to the trust he placed in the coaching staff. The episode also examines key takeaways from Behind the Uniform's financial literacy boot camp. Curtis discusses valuable insights gained from the "Playbook for Prosperity" seminar hosted by the University of Michigan Credit Union, highlighting the importance of budgeting, as well as guidance on long-term financial planning provided by David Himich of The Himich Group at Morgan Stanley. Returning to football-related discussions, Curtis elaborates on his versatility and ambitions to contribute across multiple defensive roles, drawing inspiration from prominent players such as Isaiah Simmons and Kyle Hamilton. He concludes by expressing confidence in both the team's depth and versatility—particularly within the defensive backfield—and shares his expectations for a distinguished season for the Wolverines.

And we are back, folks, for another edition of Behind the Uniform.

0:18.6

This is where we go inside the playing careers of the guys who wear the uniform for the maze and blue, but we also tell you about who they are away from the gridiron, away from the field of play.

0:30.1

And joining us right now as a young man who broke out and announced his presence on a gridiron for the Michigan Wolverines last year and is now ready to

0:39.7

break out even more this season in the secondary for the Michigan Wolverines. Mr. Mason Curtis is with us.

0:45.6

Mason, how you doing? I'm good. How about you? Doing great, man. Glad that you could be with us and

0:49.7

talk about announcing your presence. You did that in a big way in the secondary for the Wolverines.

0:56.7

And so, man, I just, you know, looking back on it, excited for you.

1:02.5

I wonder what it felt like last year as you broke out.

1:06.1

Was it one of those things where you were like, man, I told y'all,

1:08.8

was it just that that sheer

1:11.2

excitement that you felt to finally be out there?

1:14.2

I'll say it's more of just the excitement, being able to put in the work and, you know, seeing it

1:19.1

translate onto the field was a special experience.

1:23.1

Let's go back to your recruitment, though, because obviously you're a highly regarded guy coming out of high

1:28.3

school so it's not like this is a surprise but there was a lot of debate about where your biggest

1:36.7

upside was some people said hey mason's going to be a big time safety some people said hey mason could be a big time linebacker some said, hey, Mason could be a big time linebacker. Some people said,

1:47.2

hey, Mason could be one of those Swiss Army knives that could be, play on a line of scrimmage,

1:52.5

could play linebacker, could play safety, could do all of that. What did you see yourself as

1:57.7

coming out of high school? Really an athlete. I feel like that's why I chose Michigan. I feel like they'll put me in the best spot, you know, be able to use my talents for my best ability. So height, weight, where are you now? I mean, give me the up-to-date measurables. Some people say six four, some people say six five, I say six four and a half,

2:18.8

and then around two thirteen, two thirteen. Six four and a half, two hundred thirteen. So where

2:22.4

did you come in at, you know, when you reported to Michigan? I was around two hundred one

2:27.4

ninety five in that range. So now, you know, being that big and maintaining speed, that's always the kind of the balance
