But the pressures of masculineization, which require the foreclosure of whole realms of human experience, are immense. We're supposed to be tough and self-reliant, but the

pressures to conform to that role produce deeply distorted personalities that harm all of

humanity. If you don't conform, your ostracize, or at the very least afraid you will be.

It's a crucial part of the deeply troubled gender system we live under.

My first guest, Naomi Wei, a professor at NYU, is a developmental psychologist who has spent over three decades

listening to boys and young men talk about their inner and social lives.

She's just out with a book, rebels were the cause, reimagining boys ourselves in our culture, published by Dutton.

It's an account of what young males are telling us about our culture,

prioritizing achievement over connection, things over people, toughness over sensitivity, and what we can do about it.

And as you'll hear her argue, the changing gender roles of recent decades have not appreciably changed the way boys talk.
