When you wake up scared in the middle of the night and you have a pet there to calm you down,

things are okay.

But what if you wake up and your pet's just as scared as you are?

I have a story for you. When I first started grad school, I moved into an old studio apartment just off a busy road.

My apartment was on the back and looked towards

the parking lot and my bedroom was almost all floor to ceiling windows with those metal blinds.

It had only window AC units so the summer could get pretty hot. I was poor so I opted to forgo

the curtains and prayed that I got used to the light that leaked through the blinds in the morning.

About two months into living there, I got my first dog. While only six months old, he weighed in at 58 pounds,

so he was still a relatively large dog. His crate was in the middle of my room next to my bed

for when I was at school, but once he was potty trained, he mostly stayed out and would sleep on my

bed. A couple months after I got him, I started

waking up in the middle of the night. The first time, I saw three small shadows in the middle of the
