Summary

“Love is the acid test of spiritual formation.” If the telos of the spiritual journey is to become the kind of people who receive and give the love of God, the question is, How do we become people who are pervaded by love? In this annual update to our learnings around spiritual formation, we explore a very simple idea and practice that has the potential to transform us into people of love.

Great to see all of you. So much love to you. If you have a Bible, please turn to 2 Corinthians

0:05.1

chapter 3. 2 Corinthians chapter 3, as we continue, are really near the end of our annual

0:14.4

vision series. As most of you know, we're three years into a four-year long-ish journey through

0:22.3

practicing the way of Jesus. And all I want to do tonight is kind of my annual update on some

0:28.8

recent learnings over the last year on behalf of kind of our leadership metrics and all of that,

0:35.0

just some things that we're learning about spiritual formation or more on that in a minute,

0:40.2

about how we become more like Jesus. But to start off, 2 Corinthians chapter 3, let us read from

0:48.5

verse 7 to verse 18 as an act with our body to honor God in the Scripture. Would you please stand

0:56.0

with me for the reading? Verse 7. Now, if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in

1:15.8

letters on stone, if that came with glory so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of

1:22.8

Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the spirit be even more

1:29.7

glorious. If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the

1:35.5

ministry that brings righteousness? Goodness. For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with

1:45.1

this or passing glory. And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of

1:50.6

that which lasts? Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We're not like Moses,

1:57.7

so he would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing

2:03.6

away. Their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is

2:10.8

read. It has not been removed because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day, when Moses

2:17.6

read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now,

2:25.8

the Lord is the spirit and where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. And we all, who with

2:35.4

unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image,

2:42.4

whatever increasing glory which comes from the Lord who is the spirit. May it be so. Take a seat.
