Summary

Jamelle Bouie sees each presidential election like a grand experiment. On today’s show, he shares some of his hypotheses going into the 2020 campaign season. Will the rift grow between President Trump and the establishment GOP? Will Democrat presidential hopefuls continue to propose bold policies unthinkable 10 years ago? Will white Democratic candidates be able to appeal to black and brown Americans without triggering latent racism among voters?

1:03.1

It's just sort of the ritual of running.

1:04.9

Jamel Bowie's been Slate's political guru for years.

1:08.2

I asked him to tell me I'm not crazy.

1:10.4

Even though presidential campaign coverage can

1:12.5

make me feel that way, as I try to keep track of exploratory committees and chicken dinners in Iowa.

1:18.4

It's for whatever reason considered to be bad for them, just sort of plainly say, I want to be

1:23.8

president, and I'm going to run for it, and I've been planning this for some time. You have to pretend as if that somehow isn't the case.

1:31.4

Like it or not, we're going to be seeing a lot more of these announcements about announcements.

1:36.2

Jamel says even if it feels like it's too early to be paying attention, it isn't.
