I'm Mike Lanchin and today we're going back to February of 1982

when the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Britain should end corporal punishment in all state schools.

The decision came after a lawsuit launched by two mothers in Scotland.

I've been hearing from the son of one of the women who fought to stop her children being beaten in school.

The Taws has left its mark on generations of Scottish children.

It's made of shoe leather to a traditional design,

two or more thongs, the edges smoothed off to bruise rather than cut.

At the time in Scotland there was a peculiarly well-regulated mode of corporal punishment, which was the leather taws.

As recently as 1980 a survey showed a third of all teenage boys and one in 12 girls had been belted over a fortnight period.

Quite a fearsome thing and it makes quite a noise when it hits the skin and essentially a very sort of stinging sensation on the hand, just very unpleasant.

Growing up and going to school in Scotland Andrew Campbell, who's now in his 40s,

was never himself beaten with the leather belt or tors, but the threat of its use

certainly always hung over him and his classmates.
