Summary

On Aug. 2, 1978, the FDNY responded to a fire in a supermarket at 2892 Ocean Ave. in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn. This was a landmark fire in the FDNY and prompted a sea change in the way we approach fires involving trusses. Six firefighters died in the line of duty when the roof of a burning Brooklyn supermarket collapsed, plunging 12 firefighters into the flames. The name of the fire is simply Waldbaum's.
