He volunteered for 12 years as a firefighter at the Babylon Village Fire Department starting in 1970. He served as a hull maintenance technician in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War between 1971 and 1975. In 1990, He worked as a paramedic in down state Illinois for three years before being hired on a suburban department outside of Chicago. Then in 2000 he was hired by the Chicago Fire Department where he spent the first 7 years on a West Side engine. He then transferred for 5 years to Squad 2. Then several years between a South Side engine and truck, before his remaining years as a relieving lieutenant. He has worked in Engine 113, Engine 107, and Engine 93. GETTIN’ SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST Ep.223 : Tonight Thursday Oct 3rd at 8pm on our Youtube Channel. Our special guest will be 30 year FDNY Lt. Mickey Kross. He worked with the NYPD from 1968-71 and then the NYC Transit Authority from 1971-1976. Joined FDNY and Assigned to Engine 81 in 1977 Transferred to 24 Truck in 1981 Promoted to Lieutenant in 1996 and assigned to Engine 16 Retired in 2006. On 9/11, Lieutenant Kross was doing paperwork at FDNY Engine Company 16 firehouse when his company received the order to dispatch to the World Trade Center. He reported to the North Tower’s 23rd floor. Upon orders to evacuate, he was descending stairwell B when the building collapsed. Lt. Kross curled his body into a corner of the stairwell. A few hours later, sheltered by the stairway, he and 11 other members of the FDNY, a PAPD officer, and one civilian emerged relatively unscathed into a landscape of twisted steel and rubble. Certified as a paramedic - Became a Haz May Technician - Certified as a Driver Operator - Met my future wife. She had 1 year seniority on me. Married in 1986 - January 1988 – Hired by Metro Dade (now Miami-Dade Fire Rescue) as a Firefighter/Paramedic -Assigned to Station 11 in Carol City (now Miami Gardens). - May 1991 Promoted to Lieutenant - One of the original members of FL-TF1 (USAR Task Force) - Deployed to various Hurricanes, earthquakes, and the AA plane crash in Columbia - Worked at Station 11 during Hurricane Andrew (1992) - Assigned to Station 7 as well as working relief on Air Rescue. - Developed Flashover Training programs in Palm Beach, Coral Springs and the Broward Fire Academy - Taught various technical rescue training programs - November 1999 promoted to Captain - Assigned to Special Operations- Tasked with implementing a second full-time Air Rescue operation - Became the US&R Bureau OIC - Deployed as part of FL-TF1 to the WTC post-September 11th - May 2002 promoted to Battalion Chief - August 2003 appointed Division Chief, North Operations, Responsible for 4 Battalions in the northeast part of the County - August 2004 assigned as Chief of EMS - April 2005 assigned as Chief of Training and Safety (My dream job!) - Deployed to New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina - No training facility but tasked with an aggressive hiring program. Trained 400 firefighters in 18 months - Responsible for the final design and oversaw construction of the $25M Training Facility - March 2010 appointed Assistant Chief and assigned Technical Services Fire Prevention, Communications, Logistics, and Training - Deployed to Hait Earthquake - May 2011 appointed Chief of Operations - February 2013 appointed as the 12th Chief of Department - Challenging first couple of years with budget. Faced with laying off 59 firefighters in my first year. - Retired June 2019 - Hired by State Fire Marshal to coordinate disaster response - Deployed to Surfside building collapse. The father of two had bachelor’s degrees in political science‚ and public safety and fire science‚ and a master’s degree in fire protection management. Most importantly, Andy was a kind and humorous man, a friend to many, and a devoted husband and father. Andy left us with a wealth of knowledge. He touched many across the country through his articles, hands-on training, lectures, and videos. His no-nonsense, back-to-basics approach to combating today's complicated and dangerous fires brought with it a strong following. Our special guest will be 29 year FDNY veteran Lt. Mike Roy. Mike is a 3rd generation FDNY fireman. His Grandfather worked in 1937 at Engine 47 and later Engine 89. His Father in 1963 at Engine 96. He joined the FDNY in July 1987 and was assigned to Ladder 1 in Manhattan. In 1991 he transferred to Squad 41. He then after working at the 1996 Olympics with the NYTF1 FEMA team transferred to Rescue 4. He worked there until his promotion to Lieutenant in Oct 2000. He was a Rescue team Manager for the SOC operation at the WTC for the first 3 weeks after 9/11. He transferred to Squad 61 in April 2002 until his retirement in 2006. We will get the whole skinny. Our special guests will be 24 year FDNY veteran Dennis Hargett along with his son Mike, and his Dad 25 year FDNY veteran George Hargett. (We might get the kid on too :) .. George Hargett stepped into Engine 252 in 1967 and his son Dennis into Engine 235 in 1982. Their grandson/son Michael is currently following in his fathers footsteps and also working in Engine 235. The Hargetts are one of only two black FDNY families where three generations -- grandfather, father and son -- have served in the NYC Fire Department. He was one of the heroes that saved a woman from a cab, still attached to a tractor-trailer, that was dangling over the side of a bridge. She was appointed to FDNY in Sept.1982 and then assigned to E298. She worked there until her Promotion to Fire Marshall in March 1993. Promoted to LT in Sept. 1996 and covered in the 33 Battalion before being assigned to Engine 321. She helped write 2 Lt's tests and was recruited to work at FLIPS. She helped train over 600 LTs until 9/11. She was Promoted to Capt. in spring of 2002. She covered in the 14 division until her retirement in 2003. Capt. Monahan was a teacher in 1978 when her mother encouraged her to test for the FDNY after it began accepting women for the first time. She was among 41 women sworn in as the department’s first female probationary firefighters in September 1982. Her son Matthew Fiorito followed in his mothers footsteps joining the FDNY since 2018 and now works for the FDNY in Ladder 103. He was assigned to Proby school in late 1967 and assigned to Engine 302 in January 1968. He transferred to newly formed 2nd section, Ladder 103-2 in August 1968. He worked there until they were disbanded in 1974. He then transferred to Engine 328 until the fiscal crisis in 1975/76. He transferred to 96 Engine in the Bronx in 1976 for about a year before going across the floor to 54 truck where he worked for the remainder of his career retiring in 1989. Our special guests will be 43 year FDNY veteran Deputy Chief Jay Jonas and Chief of Dept Ganci's son, FDNY Battalion Chief Chris Ganci. We will be paying Tribute to FDNY Chief of Dept, Peter Ganci Jr. who died on 9-11-01. Chief Ganci was 18 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was 1965 and the Vietnam War was raging. He volunteered for “Airborne” and was later assigned to the famous 82nd Airborne unit. He would spend two years in the Army and attain the rank of Sargent. However, he was never deployed to Vietnam. He was appointed to the FDNY on September 14‚ 1968 and assigned as a firefighter to Engine 92 in the Bronx and then to 111 truck in Brooklyn. His climb to the top began as Lieutenant‚ Ladder 124‚ August 1977. While at Ladder 124‚ serving as a lieutenant‚ He was awarded the B.C. Frank Tuttlemondo medal in 1982 for performing an act of bravery and courage when he rescued a child from a burning apartment that was heavily engulfed in smoke‚ heat and fire. B.C. Robert Scalone of the 28th Battalion‚ after investigating this incident wrote‚ ‘without regard for his own safety‚ Ganci‚ with unerring skill and accuracy‚ moved into an atmosphere heavily charged with heat and smoke. If it were not for his quick‚ skillful actions‚ the rescued child would certainly have perished.’ When the incident was discussed with then Lt. Pete Ganci‚ he summed it all up very succinctly by saying‚ "When a firefighter realizes that someone is being robbed of life by fire‚ adrenalin and determination replace any thoughts of personal safety". It was this same determination that Chief Ganci‚ on September 11th as the Chief of Department‚ led and directed the most successful rescue operation of the modern era. Over 30‚000 people were saved because of Chief Ganci and his fellow firefighters. His career achievements included Captain‚ 1983; Battalion Chief‚ 1987; Deputy Chief 1993; Deputy Assistant Chief in charge of Bureau of Fire Investigation‚ 1994; Assistant Chief of Operations‚ 1996; Chief of operations 1997-99; Acting Chief of Department‚ 1998-99; and Chief of Department‚ October 1999 to September 11‚ 2001. Although Chief Pete will always be recognized for his distinguished accomplishments in the FDNY‚ his greatest legacy will live on through his Family. Pete Ganci‚ a loving husband to his wife Kathy‚ a devoted father to his children‚ Peter‚ Chris‚ and Danielle‚ will be remembered for his quick wit‚ his zest for life and his unforgettable smile. In our Newest Segment, "The Inventor's Corner" we will have on Creston Ludlow from Fire Wipes. The materials that burn in today’s fires contain a more complex mixture of textiles and composites, which creates a much more hazardous environment than ever before.
