On the 13th of June, Netanyahu launched ground and air assaults, destroying numerous key nuclear and military installations and assassinating

a number of important politicians and military officials in Iran.

This was the culmination of decades-long tensions between the countries, characterized

by some as a Cold War, a conflict that stops short of sustained military action,

in which diplomatic relations may remain in place.

That's not to say, however, that there has not been military conflict between the two rivals until this year.

Their cold war may be more accurately described as a proxy war,

in that Iran is known to materially support militant insurgent groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

And during the Syrian Civil War, hostilities expanded from proxy warfare to direct years-long military confrontation

with numerous attacks and retaliations within Syria.

This Cold War heated up in 2024 when Israel bombed in Iranian consulate and Iran seized one

of Israel's ships, after which the two countries

exchanged air strikes targeting each other's actual countries.
