black woman to direct a film that was nominated for the best picture Oscar.

For 2016's 13th, which was the first documentary to ever open the New York Film Festival, she became the first

black woman to receive an Oscar nomination as a director in a feature category.

For 2018's a wrinkle in time, she became the first black woman to direct a film with a budget of at least $100 million.

And for her latest work, 2023's origin, which is about prejudice across vast swaths of history and geography and how the Pulitzer

Prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson connected the dots between them for her 2020

best-selling book, Cast The Origins of Our Discontent, she became the first

black woman to direct a film that played in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
