Dr. Kurt Escobar completed his PhD at the University of New Mexico. His research centers on how exercise and nutrition can improve human health, function, and performance. His work ranges from exercise metabolism, the effects of exercise and nutrition on metabolic health, and sports nutrition, to the cellular responses to exercise including autophagy. He teaches courses on the physiology of exercise, exercise programming and prescription in health and disease, and exercise nutrition. Check out his Youtube Channel HERE

Welcome to the Optimal Protein Podcast. I'm Vanessa Spina.

Hello, my friends. Welcome back to the podcast. I am so excited for today's episode. We have

0:12.1

Dr. Kurt Escobar joining us today. And he is an expert on autophagy. He actually earned his

0:19.2

PhD studying autophagy. He is currently an associate professor

0:24.8

of exercise physiology and co-director of the physiology of exercise and sport lab at California

0:32.1

State University in Long Beach. And his research centers around how exercise and nutrition can improve human health,

0:39.8

function, and performance, ranging from exercise metabolism, the effects of exercise and

0:45.2

nutrition on metabolic health and sports nutrition, all the way to the cellular responses

0:50.7

to exercise, including autophagy. And today's episode episode we talk all about atopagy one of my

0:56.9

favorite topics and we talk about how autophagy is stimulated and exactly how it is stimulated from

1:04.8

certain protocols so we talk about caloric restriction intermittent fasting exercise and whether it is

1:10.8

actually stimulated by intermittent fasting, exercise, and whether it is actually stimulated by

1:12.2

intermittent fasting or not, what the research shows, and all of these different mechanisms

1:17.1

surrounding Emptor and AMPK, and really getting clear on what autophagy is, and when it is actually

1:26.1

upregulated, whether or not it is on or off or activated or basically

1:30.6

always on in the background. And we really go in depth on clarifying all of these concepts

1:36.5

around autophagy on today's episode. The central theme is talking about what the evidence and

1:42.5

scientific data really shows us in terms of what autophagy

1:47.0

can be upregulated from these different protocols, whether or not it can.

1:52.0

And these quote unquote biohacks and things that are out there on the internet,

1:56.0

what the scientific literature really shows in terms of autophagy and what it can do for us in terms of enhancing

2:02.8

longevity lifespan balancing the intake of protein and mTOR and the activation of ampk with fasting
