Summary

Today's podcast is brought to you from on board the surprise Florence Express after my delayed indirect train became a direct train – a minor Italian rail miracle. I'll talk you through how trains in Italy work, from ticketing (yes, you can book on Trainline) to high-speed competition. A nation where rail is really important – and a joy for the traveller.

Sazana and there wasn't a direct train but there was one to an intermediate

station where you could change for a train which was going through to Pisa and

1:08.0

Florence but also stopping in Sanzana.

So, I thought, well, that's great.

1:19.6

It had a six minute connection.

1:21.6

I thought, well, that's fine. Italian trains aren't as bad as some people say.

1:26.6

Anyway, we got there 20 minutes late. The train

1:30.1

have long gone. So what's going to happen now? And I imagine the answer would be a rather gruff,

1:35.5

well, wait for the next one in an hour and a half or two hours or whenever it is. But no,

1:42.8

what they did, and I've never heard this happening before.

1:46.0

There were perhaps 50 of us all trying to catch the following train, catch the train through to Sarsana, Pisa and Florence.

1:56.0

But instead, they did something quite remarkable. They could have put us on a bus, they could have made us way, but no.

2:04.6

They said, right, this train that you were on, which was going to stop here permanently,

2:10.6

is now going to operate a special service for you through to Florence.

2:16.6

So it's going to stop at all the stops along the way.

2:20.3

It's going to be about 15, 20 minutes adrift of the schedule,
