and the anti-government modern militia movement it inspired.

Now, let's go back to Boundary County, Idaho on August 21st, 1992.

A vehicle loaded with six U.S. Marshals armed to the teeth,

barreled down the road, heading toward Ruby Ridge.

The area was about 40 miles from the Canadian border in the Kanixu National Forest.

The marshals were tasked with arresting a fugitive named Randy Weaver.

He and his family lived in a cabin, tucked deep in the woods.

They also had an arsenal of weapons and a deep distrust of the authorities.

In 1989, Weaver was accused of trying to sell two sawed-off shotguns to a federal agent.

He was charged the following year with manufacturing and possessing an unregistered firearm.

When his trial came around in 1991, he didn't show up.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, and the U.S. Marshals worked out a plan to apprehend him.

His anti-authoritarian views, coupled with Ruby Ridge's rough terrain, meant capturing him would be no easy feat.

They knew they'd need to spend some time gathering information on the family's comings and goings.

They were planning to send two undercover agents, posing as new neighbors, to the house
