Summary

Every time I visit the US, I am fascinated by the differences between British and American habits. To get the latest, I have been talking to top cinematographer Douglas Bolton, who spends a lot of time in Colorado – and kindly offered me a lift along Interstate 70.

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder. It's Wednesday,

0:05.3

the 20th of August. And as you may possibly make out, from the background noise, I'm on the move

0:12.2

in a Ford Explorer. Luckily, I'm not driving, but my friend Doug is. You might remember that I

0:20.6

talked to top cinematographer Douglas Bolton

0:24.0

earlier this year when we were discussing the differences in driving between the UK and the US.

0:32.7

Well, I'm going to broaden that out today because I've spent a week in the excellent company of Doug who's been

0:39.2

here for about three years now and is therefore well placed to talk about some of the other

0:44.6

changes between the US and the UK. Can we start Doug with something which particularly

0:53.0

annoys me which is the price you see isn't the price

0:57.4

you pay. Yes, hey Simon, and that's true. Actually, a lot of people of my friends that come out

1:03.0

and visit me in the US, they go to the souvenir shops or the shops, they have that great price

1:08.1

for a pair of jeans. And then actually they get to the till or the checkout and they're like, oh no, there's another

1:13.7

almost 3% tax added on that on every purchase.

1:16.9

So that can catch you out a few times.

1:19.3

But you do get used to it after a while.

1:21.7

But yes, if you want to buy something that costs $9.99 and you've got a $10 bill,

1:29.7

well, you're not going to be able to do that because the price will be the other extra 30 cents or so. And Colorado sale tax is actually quite a lot

1:37.1

lower than a number of other states. So worth watching out for that. Next up, can we talk about language?

1:46.7

I imagine that you almost subconsciously

1:49.7

will make adjustments to words you use

1:53.4

or indeed pronunciations

1:54.8

because you know that Americans won't quite get the British version.
