On this day in 1912, 17-year-old Virginia Christian was executed by electric chair for the murder of her employer, Ida Belote.

To this day, Virginia remains the only female juvenile delinquent ever sentenced to the electric chair.

Today we're covering the tragic execution of black teenager Virginia Jenny Christian.

Let's go back to Richmond, Virginia on the morning of August 16, 1912.

Two armed men, one on either side led Jenny down the hall.

It was strange. Just yesterday it had been her birthday. On the night she turned 17 years old, Jenny slept restfully, even though she knew she'd never see 18.

The next morning she rose when they told her to. She ate her

breakfast when they told her to, and when they opened that door at the end of the

hall and asked her to sit down in the last chair her body would ever know.

Jenny did that too.

After all, it was fighting back, standing up for herself that had landed her in that narrow

hallway in the first place.

Five months earlier, on the morning of March 18th Jenny's mother told her that Ida

Belote was asking for her and Jenny likely felt her heart sink.

51 year old Ida was white, thin, and pure Hampton upper crust.

Her family owned a large grocery store in town.

16 year old Jenny was black, sometimes described as

stocky, and somebody that no one would ever accuse of being wealthy.
