Today the Amateur Traveler talks about beaches and waterfalls and caves,

active volcanoes, lava tubes, and at least one unpronounceable national historic site

as we go to the Big Island of Hawaii.

Welcome to the Amateur Traveler. I'm your host Chris Christensen. Let's talk about

the big island. I'd like to welcome to the show Justin Barnes from

Justin and Crystal.com who's come to talk to us

about the Big Island of Hawaii. Justin welcome to the show. Thank you, thank you for

having me. And do you call it the big island or you call it Hawaii?

Because there's some confusion when one talks about Hawaii,

which is both a state and an island.

It's confusing in multiple regards,

because not only that, half the people that I tell when I

Tell them I live on the big island they they assume I'm referring to Oahu because that's the most populated island's 90% of the population of Hawaii,

but not the biggest island by far.

Now, in fact, the region of the big island

that I live in, Puna, which is just one ninth give or take

of the big island, is actually bigger than the entire island of

Oahu but it has only maybe tens of thousands of people and that's it.

Yeah, no freeways on the big island of Hawaii.
