Summary

The Amateur Traveler talks to Keith Kellet about the area around his home in Wiltshire England. Wiltshire has been inhabited since the end of the last ice age and has a rich depth of history including the icon site of Stonehenge. Averbury which is an even older stone circle can also be found there as well as the Salisbury Cathedral and the ancient town of Sarum. Keith describes this verdant region with its chalky hills, its rich lowlands, its ancient barrows, and its industrial age canals. Wiltshire is only about an hour out of London on high speed train so it can even be visited as a day trip from your stay there. We have forgotten more about its history than we have remembered so its ancient sites are covered in mystery and speculation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I'm your host Chris Christensen. Before we get

0:36.4

into this week's interview, I do have some news stories for you. The first one

0:40.5

was an interesting article from Travel Mole, and it talks about Southwest Airlines,

0:45.0

and it's not the airline you once thought it was.

0:47.8

For those of you in the United States, you may know that Southwest is known as the low price leader,

0:52.0

and it still is the low price leader in some markets,

0:55.3

in about 11 markets of the 24 that were surveyed.

0:58.4

The one thing that's interesting though is the average ticket price for Southwest over the last

1:02.2

five years have gone up 39 percent, while

1:05.4

other airlines have only gone up 10 percent.

1:07.8

So the moral of the story here is, next time you fly, don't assume you know who has the lowest prices, but check.

1:16.4

And then in the news of the strange, a contortionist managed to steal from traveler's luggage by packing himself in a suitcase and having

1:28.5

himself put on with all the other luggage and then he got out on the luggage bus and

1:33.9

started stealing from people suitcases. This happened in Spain and the

1:38.1

contortionist was from Poland. And then in interesting news I think many of us assumed that Egypt is a place where everything

1:46.4

that's going to be discovered has probably been discovered, but relatively recently,

1:51.2

Egyptologist discovered 17 new pyramids.

1:55.0

Now these aren't going to be pyramids the size of the Great Pyramid, but there are over
