Summary

The Amateur Traveler talks to Jodi Ettenberg of legalnomads.com about her trip to Chile. Jodi left the corporate world as a lawyer and started her trip around the world with a visit to Chile. She first went mountain climbing in Patagonia (both in Chile and Argentina) marveling at the glaciers and appreciating the view if not the taste of lama. She then took a 42 hour bus ride to Santiago for a wild soccer game (which is not for the faint of heart) before flying north to visit San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna. She also dipped into Bolivia to visit Salar de Uyuni, the immense salt flats. Along the way she saw the largest copper mine in the world at Calama. She dealt with bronchitis (brought from New York) and food poisoning (did I mention the lama?). She met locals including a helpful taxi driver and practiced the difficult Spanish dialect of Chile. Jodi also talks with great affection about the UNESCO World Heritage site of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar which were hit hard in the big earthquake earlier this year. Valparaiso is a colorful city of art built on the side of a hill and sloping down to the Pacific. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Before I get into this week's interview I do have one news item of a personal nature

0:40.7

for anyone who is a listener to the show. The question that I raised last

0:44.4

week is, given my new job with Trip advisor as a director of engineering, would I in fact be still

0:50.8

doing the show? We worked out an agreement in terms of conflict of

0:54.8

interest and I will be allowed to do both the blog and the podcast. I will be

0:59.6

making it non-commercial so I'll be taking all the ads off but that's not so much of an issue for me and the biggest

1:06.3

issue is going to be time and really we're going to have to wait and see because obviously

1:09.6

the job does have to come first because I'm very excited about the job and obviously it's a wonderful

1:15.2

opportunity so hopefully you can bear with me as we try and figure out schedules and whether this

1:20.9

will still come out every week or not and I can't really say it this time.

1:25.0

I will say that since this is the last episode that will include sponsorships, at least for the foreseeable future,

1:32.0

this is a great time to give one last plug

1:34.0

for the Egypt photo tour, again in November,

1:37.0

and you can check that out at amateur traveler.com

1:40.0

slash tours. And then also, since I won't be doing commercial placements on the podcast

1:45.2

starting with the next show if you're interested in doing a tour on Globus again you can

1:50.9

save 10% and I'll be taking down those links from the site so you might want to check that out.

1:56.0

That's amateur traveler.com slash globus.
