places in the world to report from. More than 30 journalists were killed there in a single

incident at the end of 2009. Kate McGahn travels to the troubled southern island of Mendenau

to meet one of the reporters whose job it is to cover the daily violence there.

I've been here since 2005. I've received so far five threats on my life, but not bad.

Not bad, five threats on your life. That's five more threats than I've had on my life.

Not bad, just an ordinary thing, part of the jail.

Are there any other security measures that you take to minimize the risk?

It's dangerous to travel at night, but I am being fetched by my husband.

So he is my bodyguard also. He carries a gun because he knows that somebody might be after me.

I'm Kate McGahn and I'm with Maloo Minah, a journalist here in the Philippines.

We're on the island of Mendenau, home to about 20 million people. It's also home to Islamic

rebels, communist rebels, extortion and kidnap groups, and several powerful political families,

one of whom's alleged to have ordered the massacre of 57 people, including more than 30 journalists

just over a year ago. For this assignment program on the BBC World Service, I've come to see

what it's like to work here as a reporter and find out if those who've died have received justice.

and from her studio in Kiddipow and City, she's broadcasting to an audience across the province
