So have you ever tried to get your kid to open up about something? This is a classic parent story and I know I'm just

learning something here that most parents already know. But Jude is five and not

long ago I was trying to figure out why he wouldn't take the bus in the morning.

I'd take him out to the bus stop and he'd flat out refused to get on.

He'd scream, he'd sit down, he'd cry, daring me to pick him up and get him on myself and finally I just gave up the battle

I started walking to school with him and I'd ask him you know, why won't you get on the bus?

And he would just look back at me and glare and say,

because I won't.

Try again, are you scared of something?

And again, he would just sort of pout.

Because trying to get my son to tell me on demand what's happening in his life at any given

point is basically a lost cause.

Now, I consider myself pretty good at question asking. I'm a

journalist by trade. I've spent most of my career thinking about how to elicit

information from people who may or may not want to share it.

And so I puzzled on this for a while and one day on our walk to school because that's what we do now,

me and Jude, we walk to school together.

I started a story about my own life instead.
