Summary

Welcome to the July 2024 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

0:11.3

or I don't even know when you're listening to this but here in July

0:14.8

2024 in the United States of America it's been hot outside we've been getting

0:19.5

dueling heat domes over different parts of the country, pushing temperatures pretty high.

0:25.5

In Baltimore, in recent days it's been mid to high 90s pretty regularly and will be in the rest of the week.

0:34.0

And this is depressing to me, not just because it's hot outside.

0:38.0

Okay, sometimes it's hot outside.

0:40.0

But you know, it is our fault in some very legitimate sense that this is happening.

0:45.8

We have brought this on ourselves.

0:48.1

Not the fact that it is 95 today.

0:50.3

Of course, there's a difference between weather and climate as you all know but the fact that there are more days like this than there used to be the fact that the average is higher the fact that the extremes are more extreme, is our fault, right?

1:04.9

We human beings have done this and I know that lots of people have resisted believing

1:09.8

this, you know, as a physicist I can I can point to physics colleagues of mine who

1:15.4

twisted their brains into knots trying to convince themselves that oh it's so

1:19.1

complicated we don't really know there's just so much incentive to not believe these things. It's an interesting

1:25.9

test case, forget about the atmospheric science of it, which is very interesting, but the

1:29.8

psychology of it is very interesting. And I'm mentioning this because it will come up in this

1:35.0

AMA as we go. There's, you know, people are a little frustrated. I'm getting questions

1:41.0

along the lines of, are we doomed?

1:43.8

What can we do?

1:45.6

You know, things seem bad.
