It is a cold, dark night, and you are almost home.

When suddenly the car engine starts to sputter and the lights begin to flicker,

crawling several more yards the life slowly drains from the car,

and the lights go out.

You turn the key several times, but it does not even click.

Reaching into the console to dig for your cell phone, you remember warily that you left it on your desk, at work, in your haste to get home.

You were only a few blocks from your house, so the only logical choice

is to walk. As you climb from the car and wrap your jacket tightly around your chest,

you notice that several street lights are out. It is a short walk, so you will just have

to hurry through the dark spots.

As you round the first block, feeling winded, you think you hear something shuffling slowly behind you.

As abruptly as you stop, so does the sound.
