0:13.0	Today I'm joined by two special guests to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on our lives, our Parliament and our democracy.
0:22.3	I'll let them introduce themselves. Hi, I'm Eva Luga. I am Professor of Human Data Interaction at the University of Edinburgh
0:28.8	and co-director of the Braide programme, which is bridging responsible AI divides. And I'm Richard Leonard,
0:36.5	a Labour member of the Scottish Parliament for Central Scotland,
0:40.5	and I'm the convener of the Parliament's Public Audit Committee.

0:46.1	So, as I said, the subject to this podcast is artificial intelligence and democracy.
0:50.8	We're recording this at a time when AI appears to be everywhere.
1:03.0	Chat GPT is revolutionizing the way we work with creating text and images. And Google has also released tools recently.
1:06.0	A German photographer recently won an international prize with an AI generated image before admitting
1:11.7	what he'd done and saying he wanted to start a debate. And perhaps most notably, one of the
1:16.7	leading AI experts, Jeffrey Hinton, publicly stepped away from his work with Google, citing significant
1:22.5	fears for our future. So this is clearly a hot topic. And in that context, let me start with Eva. What do we
1:30.5	mean when we talk about artificial intelligence? How big an impact is it having and will it have
1:35.5	on our lives? When we think about artificial intelligence, we often think about science
1:40.1	fiction, so like the sentient supercomputer or the robot. But in reality, artificial intelligence isn't one thing.
1:47.0	It's a range of methods and approaches and technologies that combine to mimic aspects of intelligence,
1:54.0	not always human intelligence broadly, although we have come to think about human intelligence
1:59.0	as the metric.
