Summary

In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim talks exclusively to former Arsenal striker Lianne Sanderson. Lianne scored 41 goals for the Gunners during their record breaking 2006-07 quadruple winning season and started both legs of the historic 2007 UWCL Final against Umea. Lianne chats with Tim about the camaraderie that underpinned the team, the role of then assistant manager Emma Hayes on the UWCL campaign, how Arsenal responded to their best player Kelly Smith being suspended for both legs of the final and how the team adapted to being huge underdogs against Umea. Lianne also talks about her affection for the club all these years later, her pride at seeing the quadruple winning team on the side of the Emirates and her hope that Arsenal can do it again in Lisbon against Barcelona.

Hello and welcome to the Arsenal Women AskArstarts on AskBlog.com with me, your host, Tim Stillman,

0:19.6

and it may not have escaped your notice

0:21.9

that Arsenal have one more game to play this season. The Small Matter, the Champions

0:27.5

League Final against Barcelona in Lisbon, and clearly we want to mark that on the podcast

0:32.7

in as many ways as we can, preview it, and as many ways as we can, acknowledge it, celebrate it, all of that

0:39.0

in as many ways as we can.

0:40.9

But I think one of the things that is going to come up and frankly should come up quite a

0:47.0

lot as we pulled up to this final is the Arsenal that have been here before and they

0:50.9

have won the Champions League before.

0:53.1

I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned that they are the only British team to have won the Champions League before. Not sure if I've ever mentioned

0:54.3

that they are the only British team to have won the Women's Champions League, but they

0:57.9

are having won it back in 2007. And we're very committed on Ask Blog News in as many formats

1:06.1

as possible over many, many years of trying to tell that story as much as possible, because obviously

1:12.9

it happened in a very, very different time, far less coverage.

1:16.9

You know, quite a lot of fans will know about it, but may not have experienced it firsthand,

1:22.5

as I was fortunate to do.

1:24.3

So before we go into this episode, there's quite a lot of stuff in our archives around this if you do want to do. So before we go into this episode, there's quite a lot of stuff in our archives around

1:30.3

this if you do want to listen. So in terms of the podcast, I think it's episode three from

1:36.7

April 2019. I talked to Kelly Smith and Fay White about winning the Champions League in 2007.

1:44.6

The audio, and I was very early in my journey doing this podcast, and the audio on that,

1:49.7

completely listenable, completely legible, however, probably not of the tip-top quality

1:55.9

that you're probably accustomed to.
