Summary

Acts 5:23-32 - When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. 36 For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, 40 and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. 42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus..”

0:48.0	All right, today we continue in the Book of Acts chapter number five. Now remember, the
0:53.4	Book of Acts is a history of what happened shortly after Jesus rose from the grave.
1:00.6	And the Holy Spirit came and the apostles began spreading the message of Jesus throughout
1:06.0	their region. Now here we are in chapter five verses 33 through 42. And the apostles
1:13.8	have just been brought before the high priests because of a healing that happened. And
1:19.2	because they're preaching in the name of Jesus. And the high priests are questioning them,
1:24.4	trying to intimidate and pressure them to quit preaching about Jesus. And here's the
1:29.6	account we have before us today. It says, when they heard this, now this is the high priests
1:34.8	who were listening to what the apostles were saying, says they were enraged and wanted
1:39.9	to kill them. Now my goodness, think about that kind of a response. What were they so
1:44.3	angry about? Well, it's because of a couple of things. First of all, they have again
1:50.6	laid it at the feet of these high priests that they had Jesus killed in cooperation with
1:57.2	the Romans. It was true. There was nothing untrue about it. But again, it's rubbing against
2:02.4	the guilt that these men already feel for killing an innocent man, whether they believe
