Summary

Have you ever felt stuck behind someone who clearly shouldn't be leading? Or maybe you've been secretly wondering if you're supposed to be out front yourself? I've been thinking a lot about lead singers and band members lately — and what it really means to know your role. Most people never decide. They drift. And drifting costs years. Whether you're 25 or 55, figuring out whether you're meant to lead or support changes everything. I want to help you get clear on your answer today. Let's do this. Featured Story A few years back, I was playing in the band again. I needed to feed my family, so I took jobs that kept me in the background — reliable, dependable, useful. And honestly? The organizations loved it. But inside, something kept pulling at me. I knew I was supposed to be up front. That feeling never went away. I finally realized nobody was going to walk over and say, "Hey, you should step up and lead." I had to self-appoint. The moment I stopped waiting for permission and started going after what I wanted, everything shifted. People followed. They always do when you stop auditioning for your own life. Important Points * Most people don't struggle with ability — they struggle with role confusion, and it costs them years of their life. * Real lead singers don't audition for their own lives — they walk to the mic like they were absolutely born to be there. * Nobody's coming to pull you out of the background — the biggest door that opens is when you decide to self-appoint. Memorable Quotes * Confidence is not the same as calling, and confident people tend to step on those with calling. * Staying in the band too long starts to feel like a slow suffocation — you deserve something so much better than that. * The biggest door that will ever open is when you decide you're self-appointed and go after what you really want. Scott's Three-Step Approach * Decide right now if you're wired to lead or wired to support — drifting without that clarity will cost you years. * Stop waiting for permission and self-appoint — step boldly to the mic and own the role you know deep down is yours. * Accept the visibility, the responsibility, and the criticism — that's what separates leaders from band members. 0:07.2

Feeling pretty good. Yeah, that two weeks of head cold, I'm so sorry for the sloppy, messy sounds I've made.

0:11.4

A little allergy today, but otherwise, feeling okay. Got some over-the-counter drugs.

0:16.6

Thank goodness for science. I need a boost. I need a daily boost. I need a boost. I need a daily boost. Let's make life happen. Why not? Let's do this thing. Yeah. Hey, it's me Scott Smith. And this is the Daily Boost and back in the saddle again and feeling pretty. Well, I never left the saddle. I just... If it was a sloppy saddle, I just...

0:38.1

Yeah, I hate getting sick, but you do too, right?

0:40.5

It's going around. That's probably the most common phrase I hear these days. Man, I'm not feeling good. I got a cold. Yeah, man, it's going around. It's everywhere. Hmm. Have you got my notes from Scott yet? you should. I write this personally to you. It's designed basically be, so imagine this.

Imagine you're walking down the hallway or walking down the street or maybe you've got a bad

day going on and you don't know what to say. In fact, you don't even want to talk to anybody. Leave me alone, man. And then you bump it to me and I'm just like, boom, I drop some coolness on you. And you feel a little better about it. That's

1:12.4

kind of what the notes from Scott are supposed to be. Do I hit it every single day? No, I'm almost human. If I were, I'd really mess it up every single day because I'm almost human to get most of them right. Notes from Scott.com, that's where you get it. If you don't like it, just say goodbye to me. It's okay. You're not going to hurt my feelings. There's 8 billion people on the planet. Most of them don't like me. I'm okay with that.

1:30.7

All right. So tell you, If you don't like it, just say goodbye to me. It's okay. You're not going to hurt my feelings. There's 8 billion people on the planet. Most of them don't like me. I'm okay with that. All right, so tell you if you don't mind, when I've been sick for a little bit, when I'm down on the weather, I'm not feeling like myself. Nobody knows. I usually come back with vengeance. I come back all fired up ready to do because I get out of bed one day and I go, man, I feel good today. Where did all that gut go? There's a little guck still in the bottom of the throat here and you're not going to hear it today, I hope. But I come back the other way. I flip 180 degrees and that's what we're going to do today. Because I want to talk leadership, if I may. Now, this is not technically leadership. You'll see what I mean as a game at the show today.

2:01.6

But this is not technically leadership.

2:18.1

You'll see what I mean as I get into the show today. But this is about living life and not playing the role in life you want to play. And I see this a lot. I see it all over the place. And frankly, the only reason anybody ever quits anything is because they're playing the wrong role with the wrong people. I'll see it all the time. A lot of my friends are kind of pushing into retirement now.

2:53.5

And the main reason they retire is they hated the role they were in. They got tired of the people around them. And my boss was like, you know all that stuff, right? So are you in that role right now? I don't care how old you are. I can talk to you at 25 years old or 75 years old. And my members, my coaching clients are between 25 and 74. We talk to everybody, right? But I've ever noticed, let's point this on bands. You've been around me for a while. I've talked about this before. But I want to riff this out a little bit differently today for you because I had some experiences over the past week that brought it to my mind again. And when something comes to Scott's mind, Scott gets obsessed and you're going to hear it come out of my mouth.

2:58.1

Every band has one-legged singer. Have you noticed that?

3:02.9

There can be five singers on stage. There can be a boy band with five boys.

3:06.7

Yeah, right. They're not boys anymore. Five boys singing on stage, but one of them is just a little better. It's like Panatonics. What's the bass singer's name? He left a ways back, right? The real bass singer before they got the other bass singers, right? They're all great. We love Panatonics, but we all wanted to hear the bass singers saying, Mary, did you know, right? We love that part of it.

3:27.9

The rest of the band is important. Yes, the guitar, the bass, the drums, the keys.

3:31.7

Really important. They're called the backline. Wait a second.

3:36.1

They call the back line?

3:38.7

Yes, Scott, because they stand on the back row of the stage. Are you on the back line of life? And maybe that's cool. I mean, if you like me, a lot of people are wired that way. God's sake, not everybody can be on the front line. Somebody has to stay on the back. And some people like it back there. My wife is like that. My wife prefers to be a background player. My daughter just admitted the other day. She's been pushing for her to be in the spotlight. And there's nothing but stress. She did a great job singing and things like that. She has a great gift of speaking. And she's finding that gift to, I don't know where she got that from. Not that I have a great gift, but I did at least lay down some basics for her to get right.

4:19.2

She's figured out that she'd rather be a background player and then step up and teach people.

4:26.4

But you know what? There's only one person who walks to the front of the stage and really sings and takes the crowd. And whether you started the band, whether you own the band,
