I am a pastor of a local church, and one of my interests is Christian worship or Christian

liturgy, the history of Christian liturgy.

I'm actually working on a book right now on the subject, and in

researching for that book, I made some interesting discoveries about how the worship service has

evolved in North America over the last century. So in this video, I want to give you some food

for thought by unpacking some of these developments and highlighting specifically the origin of the

modern day worship leader.

So if you're looking for a good historical overview of North American worship in recent years,

look no further than Lester Ruth and Limswee Hong's work, a history of contemporary praise and worship.

It was published by Baker Academic in 2021, and they traced the rise and development of two

parallel movements that ended up merging into a river of modern-day worship, but many of us know

as what takes place in church on a Sunday morning.

The praise and worship movement placed a big emphasis on music being the primary thing in worship

that mediates the presence of God.
