| 0:41.2 | Lesso here in the UK. So tell everybody a little bit about who are you? How are you where you are? |
| 0:46.4 | What has been your journey through life? Yeah, well as you point out, I'm Karl Hart. |
| 0:51.8 | I'm a researcher scientist professor at Columbia University. My expertise are in drugs. |
| 0:59.6 | That is study in drugs and people trying to understand the effects of drugs, what they do, |
| 1:04.8 | what they don't do. I came to this area because I was concerned about drugs, |
| 1:12.4 | destroying my community in the 1980s. At least that's what we were told. In the 1980s, |
| 1:18.1 | I was in the UK serving in the US military and getting reports back from home |
| 1:24.1 | where that crack cocaine was destroying communities like the one from which I came. |
| 1:31.3 | And so I started to study psychology and neuroscience in order to have a better understanding |
| 1:37.4 | how drugs affect the brain. I figured that if I could alter the way that drugs like cocaine |
| 1:44.7 | affect the brain, that I could probably develop some treatments. And if I develop some treatments, |
| 1:50.4 | then I could start to go a long way in solving the problems that I thought were caused by drugs |
| 1:58.0 | in my community, problems like unemployment, violence, a wide range of problems that were attributed |
| 2:04.0 | to drugs. Some 30 years later, I have come to the conclusion that we all got hoodwinked. |
| 2:12.9 | I'm trying to help people to understand just how. |
