10 is the time and you are listening to James O'Brien on LBC. It's three minutes after 10. And I am going to share with you something that I think in some ways it could be described as the bane of my professional life. It's a haunting, a haunting thought that occasionally moves front and centre and makes me wonder whether we are wasting our time together every day. And at other times, it's a

sort of background burble that just presents itself on occasion as something that we need to be

a little bit more aware of than we usually are. I'll tell you how it's best described. If you take

what I loosely describe as the right wing media or best understood as epically wealthy people paying less

wealthy people often quite a lot of money to persuade you that things need to stay exactly as they

are and if there's anything about your own life that you're unhappy with then it is all the

fault of unemployed people immigrants the European Union single, vegetarians and Sadiq Khan.

Okay, so that that would be the neat way of describing the kind of media we're discussing.

So if you think of that as being in the business of lighting blue touch paper in the hope of setting off fireworks in your cerebral cortex, then I often think of my job as being to deliver peace and calmness into your life,

or at least facts and understanding, so that you will go, well, that's not really a firework

that anyone should be igniting. It's a firework and nonsense and exaggeration with a sort of

side order of racism and misogyny or various homophobia or transphobia or

whatever it may be. But the problem with that, the problem of being a professional extinguisher

of blue touch papers, brothers and sisters, the problem with that is that in some ways you end up following the agenda set by the provocateurs,

by the demagogues, by the racist liars in the context of a lot of Western politics.

And I caught myself really thinking that today.
