Hey, welcome back everyone. This is Kevin from Epic Gardening. Today I'm taking a question from

John who goes to Whole Foods a lot. He goes and buys organic produce at Whole Foods and he

wonders if that fruit and vegetable wash that they sell

at Whole Foods actually does anything.

Specifically, he says, do the Whole's Veggie and Fruit Washes work?

Well, to answer that question shortly, yes, they do work,

but honestly, it's a little expensive. It's not really worth the money to buy it there and if you really think about what it is

It's just there's just no need to buy it.

So here's what I found.

I found a study from the University of Maine and they said that some of the most popular

fruit and veggie washes that you can buy at the store.

Not only do they contain some chlorine, which as we know will kill bacteria on the produce,

but they were not really much more effective than just using plain distilled water. So if you really want to go

budget, just use distilled water. But if you do want to make your own, what you can do is just use plain white vinegar. You can fill a bowl with

water, add a cup of vinegar, and then you can let your fruits and veggies soak and then scrub them gently and

rinse. Now, you know, this sort of brings up a bigger question is, do you really need to wash them that carefully?

I'm sort of of the belief that you don't need to

absolutely sterilize everything that you eat. Now granted when you're buying

things at a grocery store where lots of different people are picking them up.

I completely understand you should wash them for sure.

But I don't know, when I pull stuff out of my garden, I don't really wash it that much because

I know how I grew it.
