Hello everyone welcome back to the epic gardening podcast today I am taking a question from

0:06.2

less so less says I have a gardening problem that I would love to get some advice on I'm going to start

0:11.1

an outdoor hydroponic system however I do not know how to

0:14.3

affordably cover the ground so that the grass and weeds do not continue to grow

0:18.2

underneath my system. Sparing with chemicals is not an option. Do you have any

0:22.0

ideas for natural sprays I can use that will keep the

0:24.4

grass from growing? Yes, I do. I don't actually have ideas for natural sprays,

0:31.5

although I would say if you were to pour something highly acidic

0:36.0

and also natural on the ground that would kill the grass. So something like

0:40.3

vinegar would probably kill your grass.

0:42.6

So if you pour distilled white vinegar on the ground,

0:45.0

I would expect that the grass would die.

0:47.2

But a solution that you may not have considered

0:50.6

is to just get a small bit of tarp. I know you said you don't you said

0:54.7

I don't know how to affordably cover the ground but tarp will smother the grass and

1:00.5

it will die over time. So this is actually a technique that Curtis Stone uses.

1:05.3

He's an urban farmer up in Colonna, British Columbia and so what he'll do when he

1:09.7

transforms a lawn into an urban plot is he will desod, so he'll chop the lawn out.

1:16.2

And of course that's an option for you as well if you were to just rip out the grass.

1:21.1

But if you don't want to do that, he'll also cover that land with black tarp.

1:26.7

And he'll heavily water it in and then he'll cover it with black tarp and leave the tarp there

1:30.5

for one to two weeks, maybe a little bit longer.
