Welcome back to TBTL here in the third hour of episode 68 in the Collector's Series.

Well, when I first met a young lady named Sloan Crosley,

it was outside of a kind of dingy ATM on the street in the West Village of Matt Hatton.

And she was withdrawing hundreds of dollars so she could tip her Japanese hair straightener.

And I knew that she was a classy lady at that point.

I was doing a story for NPR about how onerous the tipping can be when you live in New York City,

and how you tip out everybody in the world.

And I was trying to find somebody who would actually tell me an honest, funny story about this.

And I called everyone, and somehow in some other unrelated conversation, Sloan said,

well, I tip my Japanese hair straightening lady if that counts as trivial.

And it did, and I put her in the story, and a fast friendship was formed.

So imagine my delight when I see in writing in places like Radar Magazine,

and Playboy, and The New York Times, Sloan, and her amazing essays,

that many of now have been kind of put into a book.

It's called, I was told there'd be cake.
